Grace and I had interviews in the Denver area on Monday January 11th. The medicine residency program at CU Denver for Grace; a talk and an informal interview at NIST (Boulder) and NREL (Golden) for me.
We went for the whole weekend in order to have some time to look around and experience the place. Ethan hosted us in style at his residence in Boulder, including an evening of craft beer at the Avery tap house, and wine & Swiss fondue back at his house.
The weather couldn't have been better. Sunny and up in the 50s every day. Saturday we walked around Chautauqua park at the base of the Flat Irons on the outskirts of Boulder with Ethan. Sunday we hiked up to Chasm Lake (11,000') with a friend of mine who now works at NREL. Glorious weekend all in all.
Most of the photos come from Chasm Lake. The weather was incredible, and the location is stunning. The NE Face of Mt. Meeker and the E Face of Longs Peak tower above a barren cirque of broken rock. The climbing potential in the immediate area is immense, from obvious snow/ice lines on Meeker, smaller water ice flows in the basin, to the incredibly high, steep, and solid E face of Longs Peak (aka The Diamond). I can see us spending a lot of time up there! The lake itself was crazy. Bare rippley blue ice, but so cold it wasn't even slippery. You could have played a basketball game on its surface.
Both Grace and I enjoyed our interviews, and liked what we saw of Denver. It's still an open question where we'll end up for the next step in our careers, but this place is high on the list!
