Cascade Pass

Grace and I made a somewhat anemic attempt on Sahale peak this morning. The alarm rang at 04:00. We were moving from the Eldorado gate by 04:40. At around 06:00, somewhere below cascade pass we decided to pull the plug. The wind was ripping through the pass and tearing at our faces with 150 grit spindrift. Wind-transported snow loading of the slopes above made continuing to the pass seem dangerous.

We dug a pit and hunkered down to wait for sunrise. Brewed some hot chocolate. Enjoyed the spectacular sunrise views. Oogled some water-ice lines low on the north flank of Johannesberg Mtn. Got out while all our digits were still intact.

Conditions: dry road or hard packed snow up to the end of the road. Wind packed walkable crust beyond, except in the drifts. If it weren't for the wind I think we would have made it.
